Alley Dumpster Curbside Rollcart Recycling Pilot 1
Based on the results of this Pilot, the system of collection that was tested would not be feasible for implementation on a citywide basis, in terms of finances or logistics. At this point, we are unable to continue this Pilot.
Reducing waste, reusing materials, and recycling resources are still the most responsible ways to manage our waste and they offer many benefits to our community. Therefore, we will continue to study ways to implement services, such as household recycling, on a citywide scale. Please note that it is important for you to let your Aldermen and the Mayor know which services and programs you value, so that they may allocate sufficient resources for providing those services and programs.
Meanwhile, residents may use any of 27 dropoff recycling sites that are managed by the City of St. Louis Refuse Division. A list of sites and instructions on how to prepare materials for dropoff recycling is posted on our website at http://stlouis.missouri.org/citygov/recycle (under "Where To Recycle" and "Materials Accepted").
It is also important to consider the impact of your purchases. Buying products with post-consumer recycled content ensures that materials you place in the recycling bin have an end market. In this way, recycling becomes more economical and the costs to you are reduced. Information on where to buy recycled content products is posted on our website at http://stlouis.missouri.org/citygov/recycle/buyreusedrecycled.htm.
Another option for paper items is that some public and private schools participate in a paper recycling program. Any resident, business, shop, etc. can divert their paper waste to schools participating in Abitibi's Paper Retriever school paper recycling program (their green and yellow exterior bins, our blue classroom bins), which helps the schools raise funds. Materials Accepted in Abitibi's green and yellow Paper Retriever bins: all envelopes, brochures, catalogs, colored paper, computer paper, fax paper, folders, general office paper, junk mail, letterhead, mail, magazines, manila folders, newspapers, notepads, posters, reports, self stick notes, and white paper. Materials Not Accepted in Abitibi's green and yellow bins: cardboard, food containers or wrap, glass, laminated paper, metal, milk cartons, phone books, plastic of any kind, and tissue products. If you’re interested in finding participating schools in a location that is convenient to you, you can conduct an online zip code search at http://www.paperretriever.com or contact Abitibi by phone at (314) 381-3700, by fax at (314) 381-3733, or by email at Jennifer.Rose@Abitibibowater.com.
Additionally, some schools participate in an aluminum beverage container recycling program known as The Recycle Challenge, which can also be a fundraiser for the school. At http://www.therecyclechallenge.com/StLouisMO/default.asp you can use the Bin Locator feature to search by zip code for participating schools (or buyback locations). Or, call (314) 381-3700 for locations.
In your alley/at your curb, recycle automotive batteries, motor oil, appliances, and tires (B.O.A.T.) by placing them out for once-per-month collection with bulky materials. Check the sticker on your dumpster or rollcart for your regular Bulky/B.O.A.T. collection week. Bulky/B.O.A.T. must be placed behind your property or at your curb (not on, in, or next to the alley dumpsters or rollcarts) by 6:00 a.m. on the Monday of your regularly scheduled collection week. Once per month, City of St. Louis residents, with identification, may drop off B.O.A.T. items at the North Transfer Station (201 North Humboldt) or South Transfer Station (4100 South First Street) from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday (except for holidays). Additionally, used automotive batteries, oil, antifreeze, and tires can often be recycled at auto parts stores or service stations.
New or used materials related to building, construction, and/or interior decorating can be donated to or purchased from The ReStore, Habitat for Humanity St. Louis, 3763 Forest Park Ave., St. Louis, Missouri 63108. Call them at (314) 531-4155 or read more detail at http://www.habitatstl.org/restore. The ReStore is open Tuesday-Saturday 9am to 4pm.
New and/or used items (in working condition) may be donated to various charities. A list of charitable organizations that pick up donations of useful materials is posted at http://stlouis.missouri.org/citygov/recycle/PickupCharities.html.
