Citizens Academy

Citizens Academy

The Citizens Academy is a 12-week course where participants attend one night per week for a total of 36 hours of instruction. Nearly all instruction is by police officers and offers a glimpse into the work officers do on a day-to-day basis to protect the citizens of St. Louis. Just like the training of police officers, the Citizen's Academy isn’t just about classroom instruction! Participants will visit with police canines, interact with the department’s Bomb and Arson robot, tour the 911 center and even use driving and shooting simulators. Class members will also participate in role-play, using their knowledge to diffuse situations our officers encounter everyday. At the end of the course, a graduation ceremony is held to honor those who have completed the course.
Participants in this program will gain a better understanding of the inner workings of the department through instruction in the department’s history and structure, crime patterns, gang intelligence, homicide investigations and community policing techniques among other things. Guest speakers and demonstrations are also offered to give participants the opportunity to learn more about law enforcement.
The Citizens Academy has proven to be a great tool in building bridges in the community. The course provides participants with an understanding of the challenges officers face everyday and the role the community serves in solving and preventing crimes. Recent graduates of the program can apply the knowledge they’ve learned in order to better serve their communities.
