Corrected Public Safety Director’s Spotlight on Neighborhood Activities

Public Safety Director’s Spotlight on Neighborhood Activities

March 7 – 11 has been set aside as Missouri’s 2011 Severe Weather Awareness Week.  The City of St. Louis will be participating in the statewide tornado drill at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 10 by sounding its outdoor warning sirens.  The goal of setting aside this week each year is to save lives.  The annual tornado drill serves as a reminder that all of us need to plan for weather emergencies.  And as everyone in St. Louis knows, Mother Nature can and has brought us not only ice and snow in the winter, but tornadoes as well.  So it pays to have an emergency plan ready to put into action at a moment’s notice.

This week is a good time to review with your family the fact that you need to take shelter whenever a tornado warning has been issued.  An interior room without windows on the lowest floor is the safest shelter location.  If you are driving, stop and seek shelter in a nearby building.  If you are driving in a rural area, your safest option might be driving away from the tornado’s path.  Also, always be mindful of flash flooding.  Never drive into standing water.  For more tips on preparing for emergencies, visit the City Emergency Management Agency’s website:  http://stlouis-mo.gov/government/departments/public-safety/emergency-management/Be-Prepared.cfm .

I also want to let you know that the St. Louis Regional Disaster Preparedness Public Awareness Campaign is off and running!  The All Ready? initiative is encouraging all residents of the St. Louis region to be prepared for any emergency by 1) making a plan, 2) having an emergency kit, and 3) being informed.  For more information about the campaign, visit http://www.allreadystl.com/ .

There are a number of fun, informative, and exciting events scheduled this weekend in St. Louis .  I’ve highlighted several of them below and encourage you to stop by and take advantage of all that our great City neighborhoods have to offer.  See you in the neighborhood!
