Mason School KUMC Partnership

Mason School Signature Mission - Project Overview

KUMC's Signature Mission Project is a wonderful way KUMC members are giving back to our community - and there's a lot to tell you about. We have over 150 volunteers helping on many ways - and room for you, too, if you haven't yet had a chance to get on board. Some of the updates are below - and check out the tabs for more specifics.

Mason School Wants You!
Paintbrush Artist/Pastor Sue Mitch
KUMC tutor volunteer Deane Thompson with his Mason School friend
  • Tutors/Mentors - working with students one-on-one or in small groups (contact Deane Thompson or Karin Lindahl)
  • Exterior Projects - The Planning Team is now sketching out details for spring projects: outdoor classroom, landscaping and some general repair/painting around the building. (contact Barb Shadburne and Jim Brown )
  •  Interior Projects - The  Dragon's Lair painting and decorating teams have waved their magic wands - they have finished their part in creating The Dragon's Lair, a casual room for the students. Furniture, games and final touches will go into place early in January. Thanks to Cathy Poe and whole team! See Interior Projects tab for photos of the finished Dragon's Lair!
  •  School-wide Events and Teacher Appreciation - January 27 is the date of Mason School's 2nd annual Chili Cookoff. A Family Writing Workshop will follow the chili dinner teachers and KUMC volunteers will help families create their very own family book. A February 10 daytime and evening event called "Read A Book You Love to Someone You Love will be an opportunity for volunteers to read one-on-one with a Mason student. (contact Sally Safranski)
  • Mark your calendars! Saturday, May 14 is the Mason School 5k Fun Run/Walk (9 a.m. start). Runners - add this list to your run schedule! Walkers and Families - you can participate in the 1 mile Walk. Volunteers will be needed at the event, too, for those of us not inclined to push our endurances on the Run/Walk. More details coming! Interested in helping their parent volunteers coordinate? Want to be an event sponsor? Know of a business, organization or individual whom we can contact?  Contact Sally Safranski (314-378-1293/sally.safranski@gmail.com). Event proceeds go to Mason School playground.
  • Teachers' Appreciation: KUMC's Terrific 'Tweens created some bright beautiful clipboards that were delivered in January to Mason School - one for each teacher.
  •  "Food Power!" Volunteers were at Mason School on January 19 to help with the UMSL program, "Food Power." They helped students learn about nutrition and about the food chain.

  • And just what did we do with all those tennis balls we collected? Their new home is at the bottom of the preschoolers' and kindergarteners' chairs - teachers report they make the rooms a much quieter place these days! Thanks to all the donors!
