Grassroots neighborhood watch model gains popularity, success

Lafayette Square, known by many as a proactive neighborhood with fairly low crime, has recently been working on new plans to further strengthen its community.

A neighborhood watch program is just one of many steps the neighborhood is recently taking to keep their area safe.
"They [Neighborhood Watch] are a key component of the plan and have already garnered success in crime prevention," said Cate Hall, member of the Lafayette Square Neighborhood Safety Committee. "These resident volunteers canvas the neighborhood and focus on suspicious activity. Our goal is to reduce the prospect of crime and increase neighborhood awareness of the factors that keep the Square safer.”
Crime has decreased in the month of January since the Neighborhood Watch Program began and as new steps are taken the community hopes to see even more success.
