Public Safety Director's Spotlight - Grand Opening for a Grand Lady

Before I highlight some of the fun and entertaining upcoming activities, I want to take a moment to extend thanks and congratulations to everyone involved in the restoration of the Peabody Opera House in Downtown St. Louis. Once known as the Municipal Auditorium and then Kiel Opera House, the Peabody Opera House will continue the tradition of bringing top named entertainment to St. Louis. Many people have fond memories of shows and events at the Opera House, and now a new generation will be able to experience the thrill and excitement that is the newly renovated Peabody Opera House.  Opening night is Saturday, Oct. 1. Listed below are just a few of the events that are coming up in St. Louis. I encourage you to take advantage of all that our great City neighborhoods have to offer. Dutchtown Harvest Festival 2011

A new national holiday has been born – Food Day (Oct. 24). The day will be dedicated to addressing problems with food production, distribution, access, and healthy living and education. Mayor Slay's Vanguard Cabinet in conjunction with the Downtown Dutchtown Business Association (DT2) is organizing The Dutchtown Harvest Festival in Marquette Park on Sunday, Oct. 23, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in honor of Food Day. Booths of all varieties are planned, including a kid's zone, farmers market, cooking contests, cooking demonstrations, nutrition education, live music and food tents. If your group would be interested in a booth at the festival, email Caya Aufiero at caya@dt@stl.org  for an application form. The deadline to apply is Friday, Sept. 30.

Cinema on the Plaza

Enjoy free outdoor movies at Old Post Office Plaza, 8th and Locust in Downtown St. Louis, every Friday in September. On Friday, Sept. 30, "Throw Momma From the Train" will begin at Dusk.  

Trivia Night

A Trivia Night in memory of Tim Miller, the late St. Louis City firefighter, will be held on Friday, Sept. 30 at the St. Louis Police Officers Association Hall, 3710 Hampton. Doors will open at 6 p.m. Questions will begin at 7 p.m. Tables of 8 will be available for $160/table ($20 per person). All proceeds will benefit Miller's son and daughter. Midtown Alley Street Fest

The Midtown Alley Street Fest is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 1 from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Locust Street from Garrison to Hotel Ignacio. This year, the event features an open air arts and crafts market by Saint Louis University, live music on two stages, a microbrew beer garden, local food & beverages, car shows and a Kid's Zone. The event will be a great way to explore St. Louis and see how St. Louis' automobile district has been transformed into a growing culture center. Historic Shaw Art Fair

The 19th Annual Historic Shaw Art Fair will be held on Saturday, Oct. 1 and Sunday, Oct. 2 on the beautiful tree lined parkway of Flora Place at Tower Grove Avenue. The Historic Shaw Art Fair is the premiere fine arts and fine crafts fair in the City of St. Louis. Guests will enjoy great music, see fabulous art, and try out the new food court. Hours on Saturday will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Hours on Sunday will be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $5; children under 14 free with parents. For more information, go to http://www.shawartfair.org/ . Grove Fest

The 6th Annual Grove Fest will take place Saturday, Oct. 1 from 4 – 11 p.m. on Manchester Avenue between Tower Grove and Kentucky Avenue. Grove Fest is a free, yearly and uniquely fun, edgy neighborhood street festival featuring live music, live and interactive art, fashion shows, tattoo competitions, street performers and, of course, local food and drinks from the Grove's and St. Louis' finest establishments. Vendor and Craft Fair

A Vendor and Craft Fair will be held on Saturday, Oct. 1 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at New Covenant United Methodist Church, 900 Bellerive Blvd. (at Colorado). There will be multiple booths featuring homemade crafts, holiday items, and representation from many product vendors. Food and drink will be available for purchase. LinFest 2011

Come and enjoy LinFest 2011, the Lindenwood Park Neighborhood fall festival Oct. 1, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., in Lindenwood Park at Jamieson, Prather, Pernod and Lindenwood. Live music, family activities, food provided by some of the neighborhood's finest restaurants and representatives from area businesses will provide an enjoyable time for everyone. Harvest and Art Festival + Taste of BentonPark

The Benton Park Neighborhood Association will present the Harvest & Art Festival + Taste of Benton Park this Saturday, Oct. 1 in Benton Park, Jefferson & Arsenal Street. Enjoy live music, art, a VW bus show, and food from participating restaurants such as Benton Park Café, Bittersweet Bakery, Blues City Deli, Ernesto's Wine Bar, Frazer's,  Luvy Duvy's Café, Mississippi Mud, Sage, Niche, Riverbend, Sidney Street Café and Yemanja Brasil. Pedal the Cause

Mark your calendar for Sunday, Oct. 2 to ride your bike and benefit Cancer Research. Show your support for cancer research and "Pedal the Cause." One hundred percent of the proceeds will stay in St. Louis to fund cancer research that benefits the Siteman Cancer Center and the Children's Discovery Institute of St. Louis Children's Hospital. Twilight Tuesdays

The Twilight Tuesdays Concert Series continues at the Missouri History Museum in Forest Park on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 6:30 p.m. with a performance by Dirty Muggs.
