Press Release
Media Advisory - PSC Statement Regarding Hot Weather Rule
JEFFERSON CITY---We
write today to remind all consumers and providers of electricity in
the state that when the temperature is forecast to exceed 95 degrees,
or when the heat index is forecast to exceed 105 degrees, Missouri's
Hot Weather Rule becomes effective, and all utilities are prohibited
from disconnecting electricity services due to nonpayment of a utility
bill.
No matter where you live in the state of Missouri, and no matter who
provides your electricity service, Missouri's Hot Weather Rule
protects you from having your electricity shut off during times of
extreme heat due to nonpayment of a utility bill. Every summer,
Missourians suffer from heat-related illnesses and even death due to
excessive temperatures.
If a representative of your utility attempts to disconnect your
electricity service when Missouri's Hot Weather Rule is in effect, you
should remind the utility that it is prohibited from disconnecting
service, and immediately call the Missouri Public Service Commission at 1-800-392-4211.
Enjoy your summer, and please remember to stay safe in the heat.
Sincerely,
Kevin D. Gunn, Chairman
Terry M. Jarrett, Commissioner
